Dealing with the Nuances of “kufr”

Liberalartsforum — April 10, 2010 — topic: Dealing with the Nuances of “kufr” is a talk given by Faraz Khan at Princeton University. He highlights different meanings of the word kufr in the Quran and as understood by Muslim scholars. He also discusses “Fascist Muslims” and their misunderstanding of the term kufr in the Quran.

The talk given at Noor-Ul-Iman School Fundraising Dinner on March 20, 2010 by Faraz Khan covers two historic Islamic educational institutions – Nizamiyya University (Iraq) and Aligarh Muslim University (India). Nizamiyya produced luminaries such as Imam Ghazali, Shahrastani, Zuhair, and Shaykh Sa’di. Aligarh University also produced leaders in Maulana Mohammad Ali Johar, Liaqat Ali Khan, and Gulgee. The speaker related these two schools of learning to the contemporary model, Noor-Ul-Iman School, NJ, USA.

Topic: The Goal of Islamic Education Faraz Khan, chaplain at Rutgers University focuses on Islamic education. He briefly talks about the recent PEW survey on Muslim Americans “Middle Class and Mostly Mainstream” status, as well as the disturbing “7%” upholding extreme views. The talk reverberated the bipolar Quranic concept of a lifecycle – either running after a deluding world or competing with people for the hereafter.
