Summer 2009 Program
Seerah,
An Intellectual Discourse
on The PROPHET’S LIFE
Islamic Society of Central Jersey
Time: 6:30 – 9:00 pm
July 14 – 30, Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:30 – 9:00pm
Description: Many people tend to either romanticize the Seerah to a point of unattainable piety or present a dry, alienated dry chronological reading, thereby, losing many components of the Seerah such as: the personal traits of the messenger, his social activism, his intellectual prowess, and, above all, his ability to CHANGE hearts and minds.
The prophet changed the conditions of the people around him, but what was his formula? How does the Seerah relate to the American Muslims? And what are some of the steps in this direction of intellectual, civic involvement, and social activism in the light of the Seerah?
Seerah, an Intellectual Discourse on Prophet’s Life, a six session program on various aspects of the Seerah, is taught by a core group of young scholars and social activists. The main idea in this exploration of the Seerah is to design a course that will initiate an intellectual discourse – to discuss contemporary issues in the light of the Seerah. There will be reading assignments (reading material will be provided), open discussions, and critical review of Islam in America.
