The number of junk email especially in Ramadan is on an all-time high. Two days ago, I received an email from a legitimate Islamic organization telling me about a program 500 miles from town. This is not the first email either and after receiving scores of pay $$ and get your iman ticket I decided to try something new – unsubscribe!
So I said istaghfirullah – May God forgive me for this and scrolled all the way down to the bottom of the email. Looking at the last sentence, I couldn’t help but say takbir! I had a huge smile as I had found what could only be described as sakinah from spam. The statement read …
“– If you would like to unsubscribe from future XYZ e-mails please click here –”
So with a huge smile and huge takbir, I clicked on “click here”. But before I could say al-hamdo lillah mission accomplished, following is what I received from the organization: “Assalaamu Alaykum
Thank you for emailing XYZ Islamic Istitution. We pray this message reaches you in the best of health and faith. You have received an auto reply because we want you to know that your email is important to us. We receive hundreds of emails, letters, faxes, and phone calls every day from supporters throughout the world and we try our hardest to respond to every correspondence as best as we can, and in a timely manner. Although, it is our hope to be able to accommodate all requests, it may take us some time to respond.
We sincerely apologize for any delays in responding back to your email.
