writing for Tri-State Muslim

Posted by Faraz On February - 20 - 2008

Bismillah,I have been looking for a community newspaper where one can find news about Muslims in the US. A newspaper/magazine that covers everyday Muslims. After a brief search, I think I have found what I was looking for in the Tri-State Muslim. It is a paper that seeks to build network for Muslims and promote businesses and events at your local mosque. Also, the paper has a well-balanced coverage. The news is always about a very diverse audience which is great. So I gave the publisher a call and told the brother that I was interested in writing for the paper… Alhamdo lillah, they published my first article in the last issue and inshAllah I will be writing for the TSM on a regular basis. My next article “The Making of a Mosque” will be published this Friday. You can find out more about the paper below.

"Treat Women with Kindness"

Posted by Faraz On February - 16 - 2008

This was one of the last words of the Prophet (s). He (s) specifically commanded men of this ummah to treat their spouses and women with compassion and kindness. The theme of my last khutba at the New Brunswick Islamic Center was our relationship at home. Are we partners in building a healthy society or are we a burden on others? Few words to ponder over our relationship at home… You probably won’t find many khatibs speaking about this topic.

Archbishop of Canterbury… A Reasonable Man.

I just wanted to touch upon this important news. I will put my thoughts together in a day or so. However, I am almost sure that some pundits will qualify Sharia’ with Taliban’s Rule or some other form of extremism. It is this simple, as long as you are not breaking the civil law, two claimants can settle their affair with an arbitrator. The arbitrator can decide the case based on the Torah, Bible, or the Quran. I don’t think people have forgotten “Church Discipline”. Just try visiting your neighboring Catholic school…

The Archbishop of Canterbury gave an exclusive interview to BBC Radio 4’s World at One reporter Christopher Landau on 7 February 2008.

It begins after the reporter asked him whether the adoption of Sharia law really was necessary for community cohesion.

The Archbishop of Canterbury has suggested that English law must accommodate some aspects of Islamic law, or shariah. Do you agree? Should U.S. law make room for shariah?

Khutba: Love & Compassion

Posted by Faraz On February - 12 - 2008

In an unorthodox attempt to cover different issues every Friday, I am announcing the khutba for this coming jumuah at New Brunswick Islamic Center. I will talk about marriage and family relationship based on love and compassion.

Why am I announcing this forthcoming khutba? Is it a Valentine’s Day thing?
No, I think we as a community have neglected marriage issues as a whole. Muslim couples are looking for tips and some guidance but they do not find it from Muslim sources. Unfortunately, people look for advice on love from people who aspire for a different manzil (destination).
Since many of us are bombarded with messages of “buying love” through radio, TV, internet ads, I will use this media frenzy to promote inshAllah a sound understanding of love at home. For love is not for sale at the flower shop today.
There are three magical words if said with sincerity can unlock the heart of your partner. The are “I Love You”.

“Our Lord, grant us the delight of our eyes from our spouses and our offspring…” Koran 25:74.
